on the democrats plan to avoid catastrophe. >> reporter: in fairfax, virginia. >> can we do it? are. >> reporter: first term democrat incumbent jerry connolly is working this labor day weekend to hang on to his congressional seat. >> i'm talking to many of my colleaguesment they get the threat. they understand that there is understandable anxiety in the country given the state of the economy but they're prepared going into battle. >> reporter: but connolly's race is just one of dozens the democrats could lose. in a midterm election that appears to be increasingly tilting towards republicans. the latest gallop poll has no good news for democrats. republicans have a 10 point lead, 51% to 41% on the generic ballot. and democratic voters are in the dumps with twice as many republicans saying they're very enthusiastic about voting this fall. while party leaders are not con seating control of the house they are looking to cut their losses by redirecting campaign funds to the strongest democratic candidates. >> we will look at races that we can win. so we make a determination about whether or not those

one -- virginia and maryland. then you have democrats that face tougher calls. chett edwards faces a tough race. these are members represent conservative districts. this may not be the year for them to save their seats. host: what will be the game plan for the white house to save the majority in the house? guest: to be very cold-blooded in their a look and where they need to invest in these races. decide where their money can make a difference. host: will the president be campaigning for individual candidates? will he stay clear and fund- raiser for them instead? what will he do? guest: i think you'll see president obama heading up the new york checkbox pretty soon. he will head up the los angeles checkbox. -- checkbooks. many of the conservative democrats -- and democrats in conservative districts, do not want to have the present campaign for them. the individualize their races. the distance themselves from the national party. host: the first lady is going to spend some of her political capital and carefully stepped into the campaign season. where do you expect to see her? guest:

get to calls approximately fred joins us from west virginia. you're on with charlie peters. caller: thank you very much for c-span for trying to do a better life for everybody. i have a president for president johnson. he had a speech in new york about immigration. he said that i made a new law that immigrants coming in u.s. has to be two cditions. one is he has to have a very close relative, and second, he has to have some kind of skill or know some kind of job. i know if they do that, the problem is going to be solved. host: talk about immigration. guest: the speech he refers to i'm not familiar with, but one of the tremendous accomplishments with johnson in my mind, as least, was the immigration bill of 1965, where for years, we had had a great wave of immigration around the turn of the century, but then congress had passed a very restrictive bill that for 30 or 40 years restricted immigration to people, pretty much to white northern europeans. itas almost impossible for meone from southern or eastern europe to get in, or from anywhere else on the planet. johnson open america up
